Separation Counselling for Couples in Darwin

Ending a relationship can be one of the most difficult transitions a couple and family will face. Even when the decision to separate has been made, working out how to move forward can bring grief, anger, uncertainty and difficult conversations.
Separation counselling provides a structured and supported space to work through this transition together.

Rather than focusing on repairing the relationship, the work focuses on helping you understand what has brought you to this point, communicate more effectively and navigate the separation in a way that reduces unnecessary conflict and minimises harm.

Where children are involved, there is also an important opportunity to think carefully about how you move from being partners to being co-parents, and how you can protect your children from becoming caught in the conflict between you.
As a clinical psychologist with extensive experience working with couples, I provide a calm, thoughtful and evidence-based approach to navigating separation and the changes that come with it.

How Separation Counselling Can Help

Every separation is different.

You may have recently decided to separate, already be living apart, or know that the relationship is ending but be struggling to talk about what happens next.
Separation counselling gives you a professionally supported space to have conversations that can otherwise become overwhelming or quickly escalate into conflict.

A Structured and Supported Process

Separation counselling is not about taking sides or deciding who was right or wrong.

Both of you have an opportunity to talk about your experience of the relationship and what the separation means for you.

There may still be hurt, anger, grief or disagreement. The goal is not to remove those feelings, but to help you understand and manage them so they do not determine every conversation that follows.

Moving Forward With Greater Clarity

Separation can involve an enormous amount of uncertainty.

Counselling can help you clarify where things stand, communicate more constructively, establish boundaries and begin thinking about what your relationship with one another needs to look like from here.

For some couples, having a supported conversation also provides an opportunity to acknowledge what the relationship has meant, understand how it reached this point and bring a greater sense of closure to its ending.

When Children Are Involved

When you have children together, the couple relationship may be ending but your relationship as parents continues.

Sessions can help you think about how to talk with your children about the separation, reduce their exposure to adult conflict and develop more workable communication as co-parents.

The aim is not to create a perfect co-parenting relationship. It is to help you find a way of working together that places your children’s wellbeing ahead of unresolved conflict between you.

What If One of Us Isn’t Sure About Separating?

Couples do not always arrive at the decision to separate at the same time.
One person may feel certain that the relationship is over while the other wants to keep trying. Sometimes both people are unsure and find themselves repeatedly moving between staying and leaving.

When you are in different places, the immediate goal may not be either repairing the relationship or proceeding with separation.

Counselling can provide space to understand where each of you stands, what has led you there and what needs to happen next.

I will not tell you whether you should stay together or separate. My role is to help you understand what is happening more clearly and work towards a considered decision about the way forward.

Your Relationship Assessment Day

Separation counselling begins with a Relationship Assessment Day.

Having a full day together gives us the time and space to understand your relationship, hear from each of you individually, and then come back together for a supported conversation about the separation and what happens next.

We Begin Together

We start by meeting together to talk about the history of your relationship, what has brought you to this point and what each of you hopes to get from the day.

This gives me an understanding of your relationship as a whole, as well as the issues that are making the separation particularly difficult.

Individual Sessions

I then meet with each of you individually.

This gives you both an opportunity to speak openly about your experience of the relationship and separation, including things that may be difficult to discuss in front of your partner.

Coming Back Together

We finish the day together.

This final session provides a supported space to talk about the separation, clarify where things stand and begin discussing how you want to move forward.

The aim is not to determine who is at fault or persuade either of you to stay in the relationship. It is to help you have a difficult conversation in a way that is clearer, calmer and more constructive.

What Happens After the Day?

For some couples, the Relationship Assessment Day may provide much of the clarity and support they need.

Others may benefit from further separation counselling, particularly when communication remains difficult or there are children and an ongoing co-parenting relationship to navigate.
At the end of the day, we will discuss whether further sessions would be useful and what the next steps might look like for you.

The Relationship Assessment Day is $2,000. Medicare rebates do not apply to relationship counselling or relationship appointments.

Separation Counselling Is Not Mediation

Separation counselling focuses on the emotional and relationship aspects of separating and on helping you communicate more constructively through the process.

It is not family dispute resolution or mediation, and I do not provide legal advice or determine parenting, property or financial arrangements.

If you need assistance reaching formal agreements about parenting, finances or property, you may also need advice from a family lawyer, mediator or family dispute resolution practitioner.

Is Separation Counselling Right for You?

Separation counselling may be helpful if you and your partner:

  • have decided to separate and want support navigating the process
  • are struggling to talk about the separation without conflict escalating
  • are at different stages of accepting that the relationship is ending
  • want an opportunity for both of you to be heard
  • want to understand how your relationship reached this point
  • want to protect your children from unnecessary conflict
  • need to establish a more workable relationship as co-parents
  • want professional support to help you move forward with greater clarity and respect.

You do not need to have everything worked out before you come. That is part of what the process is there to help with.

Support for All Couples

Separation counselling is available to couples regardless of relationship structure, background or circumstance.

Whether you are married, de facto or in a long-term partnership, the focus is on helping you navigate the end of the relationship in a way that is appropriate for you and your circumstances.
